Fish Shop Sunday (Frying Nemo)

So it’s a sunny Sunday. What not to love… there’s a cool breeze, lovely sunshine, morning at church and good company with cool peeps.

Post Church we kick-on to a lovely fish bar in Potts Point – The Fish Shop. The interior of this nautically themed fish shop is gorgeous, think American seaside resorts, the group of hamlets and townships known as the Hamptons! Holiday homes of America’s party set, seaside fishing villages and of course casual fish & chip bars like this one. It’s lovely.

This place certainly really knows how to work a theme. Fishing hooks & nets and seashells line the walls and counters & all the staff are dressed with the relaxed beach boy/ beach babe look. We find a beautiful long table to seat us all. A lovely waitress explains the market menu to us, but most of us opt for just the traditional menu.

I tuck into some lovely calamari (fresh into the pan and out) with chilli & garlic and crusty sour dough to mop-up the liquids. Simple but perfect. A Riesling from Mitchell ‘Watervale’ in the Clare Valley (South Australia) washes it down. Perfect… the chatter grows, jokes are exchanged, and the tables around us fill with the inner city “look at moi” crowd. The breeze filters through to balance the rays of sunshine. It’s a lovely afternoon.

I then get my main the Fish & Bacon Chilli burger. This is fast becoming a classic with a cult following in Sydney. The burger is a crumbed fillet of meaty white fleshed fish (blue eye or barramundi – depending on what’s fresh), bacon, pickled chillies and Japanese mayo on a beautiful bun with a side of chips. The burger is amazing, like all the previous experiences. This burger has a special place in my life. I take my time, I savour every bite… it’s not to be rushed. I have another Riesling to wash it down… is there a better way to spend an afternoon – I don’t think so!

My friends tuck into their fish and chips and other menu items (see below). We finish-up and bid each other farewell, noting it has been a marvelous experience!
